Our first stop was Grand Cayman, an island discovered by Columbus in 1503 when his ship was blown off course by a freak wind as he sailed between Panama and Hispaniola. We were to dock at the capital of George Town on the western side of the island, but the winds were too strong to take the ship into that bay, so we dropped anchor on the south side of the island and tendered into port.
The down side is that we would have to take a taxi to the famous “Seven Mile Beach” and since we had booked an excursion on a 1723 Pirate ship, we did not have time to see and enjoy this famous beach. We were entertained and made to live the “pirate life” for a couple of hours. Marv was forced to submit to examination of his “guns” and teeth, and to swab the deck on his hands and knees. Ellen had to “walk the plank.” They did reward our efforts with unlimited rum punch.
