As we left the Portage area this morning we had hoped to stop in Girdwood and take the tram to view the surrounding glacial mountains and Turnagain Arm. However, due to rain, clouds and fog, it was not to be. As we passed Turnagain Arm this time the tide was in. It was out when we passed by here on July 7th, so we got to see it both ways. Just as we neared Potter’s Marsh the rain quit…HOORAY! Still cloudy, but we’ll take it. We had to pull over for the log house with Christmas lights and wheels coming down the road. This is Alaska.
We did stop at the Alaskan Zoo in Anchorage.
It was great to see so many animals up close, but their pens are very small and the animals pace a lot, not displaying their natural habits as they do at the Conservation Center we visited yesterday. Some school children were howling at the wolves and the wolves howled back. There was quite a sing-along.
See him in the trees.A zoo keeper told us that the wolves just love to have the children come. It is a pack of 3 males and 3 females, all siblings rescued at 2 weeks of age and have lived all of their 3 years of life at the zoo.
Dall Ram
Ellen got a surprise as she tried to photograph a bull musk ox and he charged at her butting the fence. Guess he was not in the mood for pictures today.
Baby musk ox, so cute!
The polar bears are a big sight to see. They wish it was snowing.
Their feet and paws are huge.
The snow leopard looked as if it could not wait till winter either.Mr Grizzly needed a friend. All for today we will head to Fred Meyer for the night. They are so nice up here. Huge, clean and sell diesel.
