Back to Anchorage, but a stop at Alaska Wildlife Center first.

July 22, 2009
We only traveled a short distance today back toward Anchorage. Along the way you can see where the land sank in the 1964 earthquake.

We stopped at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center near Portage. Our nephews and niece would be in heaven here. Maybe even Scott. This is a nearly 200 acre drive-through animal park, featuring grizzlies, Just hanging out! man do i need a manicure!black bears, caribou (reindeer), big moose, musk-ox, wood bison, elk Strutting his stuff! There are also great-horned owls and red fox. This center is dedicated to the rehabilitation of orphaned and injured animals. If they cannot be released back into the wild, they stay on at the center. There were several very cute baby moose that had been orphaned and we were treated to a male grizzly frolicking in the pond. He kept looking over at us, as if to make sure we were still watching and were properly entertained.

Tonight we join other RVers staying in a large turn-out lot. Gotta love free camping with beautiful mountain views!

Tomorrow we hope for a day that is less wet so that we can go to the zoo in Anchorage, which we were told was a great zoo by some nice Australians we met on one of our glacier cruises in Whittier.
