We got a bright and early start. By 9:30 AM, Ellen saw the first black bear with a cub. A few yards away mom was facing off with a very mangy and hungry looking coyote. Unfortunately, the road had no shoulder to pull off, and the face-off was occurring down the embankment, so Marv didn’t even get a look. We followed the Fraiser River up Hwy 1 East. At Yale we went through a series of tunnels through the enormous mountains, winding with the river. It was amazing to see that railroad tracks were built on each side of the river…quite a feat!

Soon after, we were stopped for about 40 minutes due to a tragic pick-up fire that subsequently caught the hill on fire next to the road. The poor guy was pulling a 5th wheel, but he must have done some quick thinking. The truck was a charred skeleton, but the trailer appeared unharmed. Before we knew what had caused the fire, it was fun to watch a helicopter dip water from the nearby river and expertly dump or sprinkle it in the appropriate places. It was a long day of driving, making it to Hixon, B.C in early evening.
