Leaving Stewart going North on Cassiar Hwy

06/16/09
We left Stewart at 7:40 AM and headed back out to the Cassiar hwy. It was a little drizzly, but in just a few minutes we saw our first grizzly bear loping down the road in front of us. He/she finally moved off the road but still close enough for some close up pictures. We figure it was a young bear, perhaps 2-3 years old and maybe its first year away from mom. It didn’t seem too concerned about us. As we headed up the Cassiar Hwy we were stopped at Beaver Pond Creek bridge as flooding had washed out the road. After about 30 minutes we were on our way through the mud…OK we’re getting’ dirty now!

We also hit our first gravel road and a long, winding, 8% downgrade. We appreciated our exhaust brakes and were surprised that the road was actually much smoother than the paved road. However, due to rain it was flinging mud everywhere and we were finally initiated to the mud bath we’d heard about as people venture to the Yukon and Alaska. We stopped at a rest stop and took a picture of our muddy rig…the dirtiest it has ever been.

We crossed the Stikine River Bridge which was high above the water with a metal decking. They use this style of bridge a lot up here as the snow and ice can melt through rather than make a very slick bridge in winter.

We found a beautiful “FREE” place to spend the night. We turned off unto the old highway for about ½ mile to the old rest stop. W backed into the bushes just a few feet from the rapidly flowing river that lulled us to sleep.
