Back on the road again the scenery was fantastic. We stopped at historic Carcross YK to visit the museum in the Depot and walk along the sandy shore of Bennett Lake. You think it was the ocean. This is where the stampeders departed the trail or later the train, to begin the water part of their journey to the Klondike in homemade boats, or if they were lucky, in steer-wheelers.
We also stopped at the Carcross desert, the world’s smallest desert. This is an unusual area of sand dunes, composed of sandy lake-bottom material left behind by a large glacial lake. Strong winds off Lake Bennett make it difficult for vegetation to take hold here, although there are a variety of plants that do grow in this sand.
At lunchtime, we pulled into Caribou Crossing, a wildlife museum containing the world’s largest polar bear ever mounted (1600 pounds). There were several very good displays of animals, although they are housed in a large metal building which detracts from the quality of the displays. They have a very life-like, life-size woolly mammoth recreation which was impressive.
They also have gold-panning, ATV tours to desert, and sled dog rides. We elected to just play with the sled dog puppies, have some ice cream then head down the road.
Rather than go all the way back up to Whitehorse we took Hwy 8, Tagish road, part of the Atlin Tagish Carcross Scenic Loop back to HWY 1, the Alaskan Hwy. At about Km 1322 we spotted a road leaving the highway and winding down toward a small lake. We decided it looked like a great place to boon dock for a few days for Ellen to work on her fall courses and Marv to catch up on things like changing the air filter and looking the truck and trailer over. We had seen a grizzly mom and cub a little way back along the road and there are suppose to be moose in the area so we were hoping we’d get to see some while camping here, but no spotting thus far. We’ll be back on the road in a few days.
Stayed tuned…………..
