We had to check out of the RV park by noon, so we drove around the cove toward the ferry dock and found a nice pull-out where we could put up the satellite dish to check email, update the blog and get other work done while waiting for our 8:30 PM ferry ride to Skagway. Taking the ferry was quite an adventure. The plan the ferry people had was for us to drive forward onto the ferry go clear around the other end and come up the other side so that when we drove out we’d be facing forward. (You have to go out the same door you come in on). Because of low tide the ramp was steep and we could not turn enough to clear the middle section of the ferry without hitting the bed of the truck on the trailer.
Sorry we took movies but are having issues placing them here so no pictures.
Instead they had us go around the other side of the ferry which means we would have to back out to the front of the ferry when we got to Skagway. The evening was calm sailing up the fjord and we had a nice meal of fish and ships on the ferry. Their prices are very reasonable compared to onshore restaurants and the food was good. A cruise ship leaving Skagway.
Arriving at Skagway 10:30 PM
Getting off the ferry the experienced crew guided us in backing to the front of the ferry. We had to jack-knife into the bow of the boat, and then jack-knife the other direction to head out the door and onto the dock, a nail-biting experience but, the ferry crew is really great. From the dock we realized we were still well below the road level and had to drive up another steep ramp. Without 4-wheel drive I’m not sure we would have made it up that ramp and coming onto the top surface the bed of the truck still hit the bottom of the trailer. However, we were again safe on land. We drove around a bit in town to search for a friend who was staying in Skagway. While at his place a policeman pulled up behind our rig (parked on the side of a residential road and asked if we were looking for a place to stay (it was 10:30 at night). He escorted us to a great place just out of town where we could park for free. He had spent several years in Washington and was a great Husky fan so we were OK in his book.
