Leaving Skagway and White Pass Summit area

Wednesday August 12, 2009
Rising at 5:00 AM, we said good-bye to Skagway and headed up White Pass. This was our camp all alone for the last 4 days. Cost, free. I must say that this is one of the most beautiful drives that we have had. The road to Valdez was great as well. The rock all around was smoothed and carved by Glaciers and there are many small ponds and lakes everywhere.
We also saw some kayak's on a tour from a ship by the depot.

All went well until we pulled into the Fraser Train Depot (a historic site) directly adjacent to the Canadian Customs station. The lady customs official was having a coronary that we had stepped onto Canadian soil without reporting to customs first. Since the station is well into Canada, we had been in and out of the truck several times taking pictures, but she couldn’t wait 1 minute for us to use the restroom before driving through customs. Luckily, by the time we got over there to report, the grumpy lady was busy with someone else and a very nice man checked us through. For future travelers coming this way, you must go to Customs, and then you can pull into a parking lot and walk back to the depot if you’d like to see this historic building. If you drive back you have to do the customs thing all over again. Anyway, we pulled into the parking lot past customs and watched a couple of trains come through.
We also watched the poor people in the fifth-wheel behind us come through customs, where the afore mentioned lady had their truck and trailer searched. They had every baggage door open and were having to give up their firewood etc. We are sure glad we’ve had no problems going through Customs so far. Later down the road some people in a tour bus were talking about the same lady who checked them through customs and did not seem too pleased with their greeting to Canada.
Oh well, on we go.....
