Leaving Valdez, Heading north to Tok

Saturday August 1, 2009

We left Valdez this morning. It was another sunny day to travel. Since we did not stop at Worthington Glacier on our way into Valdez,

we stopped this morning and took the short hike up the side of the glacier. The view looking down from our hike. There was a huge hole in the ice that a climbing group went through and out onto the glacier. We hiked up to the opening which looked very small from below was probably 30-40 foot high when we got up to it.
One last look as we left heading north to Tok. It is amazing. We also stopped at the Visitor’s Center for the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, the largest national park in the U.S. (about the size of 6 Yellowstone Parks). There are only a couple of short roads going into the park and no formal campgrounds, so it is truly a wilderness. There are many glaciers, boreal forests, lakes and streams…a hiker’s paradise.

Soon after, we came upon a cow moose and her two calves. She darted into the trees, so we were unable to get a good picture.

We continued down the road to about an hour south of Tok where we joined another RVer in a pullout for the night. As the evening went on more stopped and by bed time there were 6 RVer’s stopped for the night. The view can’t be beat. We are looking down on Cobb Lakes, a chain of 3 lakes and we are suppose to have great views of Tanada Peak, Mount Sanford, Mount Blackburn and Mount Drum. They were only slightly visible due to clouds. Oh well.

There are supposed to be moose here too, so perhaps we’ll see some as the evening goes on. There are suppose to be raspberries here too, so Ellen will venture out to see if she can find enough for breakfast.
