Liard Hot Springs to Muncho Lake

Tuesday August 18, 2009

We slept in this morning and didn’t get on the road until 11:00 AM. The bear trap was still empty. The drive from Liard Hot Springs to Muncho Lake is really beautiful. The forest is a mix of Lodge Pole Pine, Paper Birch and Quaking Aspen. It is probably spectacular in the fall when the leaves on the deciduous trees turn colors.

The road is winding and up and down hills, making the view around the corner difficult. On one occasion we came up over a hill and down the other side was a herd of wood bison in the road. There was a moment of panic as we were sure we were not going to be able to stop in time. But all ended up ok for us and the Bison.
A little later we saw our first Stone Sheep, a mom and baby. They are so agile. The baby hopped up on a vertical rock with no effort at all.

We arrived at Muncho Lake overlook in the early afternoon. The lake is known for its beautiful deep green and blue waters. The colors are attributed to copper oxide leaching into the lake as well as flour fine glacial silt in the water that projects back only green and blue spectrums of light.
Pulling into Strawberry Flats Provincial Park we took the last campsite in the campground, giving us an excellent view of mountains and water in all directions from our living-room windows. We’ll hang out here tomorrow, perhaps taking a hike up a trail we see on a nearby mountain. The BC parks up here are kept so well.
