At our next pull-out to rest we struck up a conversation with a trucker from Atlanta, Georgia. He was concerned that he did not have cell service and wondered if he would have it by the time he got to Tok. He is an independent trucker that took the job to make a haul to Alaska (Delta Junction) on a dare. He had just gone over a stretch of roller-coaster frost heaves and expressed a strong desire to get back to Atlanta as soon as possible. He was a funny and entertaining fellow and we quite enjoyed the visit. It is amazing what and how far a trucker hauls things in this country. I forgot to get his picture.
We stopped at the Tetlin Wildlife Refuge, but they were just closing for the day. They have a nice facility (on the outside) and a viewing deck that would provide a great view of bird migrations in the spring and fall. Today was not so good due to the fire smoke. All was pretty quiet while we were there. However, a bit down the road we did see some Trumpeter Swans on a roadside pond. You can see the 2 baby's swimming towards her.
We crossed the border and are once again in the Yukon for at least a couple of days before crossing back over into Alaska and proceeding to Haines. Here is a picture of Alaska. We have been on ALL those roads except 1.25 inches of them!!
We lost an hour since we are back on Pacific time and decided to stop for the night at Snag Junction Yukon government campground on a small Lake. HELLO MOSQUITOES! We sure haven’t missed those little pests while we’ve been on the coast. Other than that it is a nice little campground for $12.00.
