Skagway final day

Tuesday August 11, 2009

Our final day in Skagway. We visited the Skagway Museum & Archives. A small, but informative museum with Gold Rush artifacts, historical records and photos. They have a couple of very good films on Skagway, the Gold Rush and the building of the White Pass Yukon Railroad. We also wandered around the back of the museum where an old steam engine was sitting as well as some old equipment used to build the railroad line…a old steam shovel and caterpillar rusting under the trees.

We drove up the Dyea road to the overlook of Skagway for some final pictures.
We had intended to hit the road this afternoon, but were not able to get our act together, so decided to get a really early start tomorrow instead. We visited with our friend Bill for awhile who has been here for a month and will head back to Seattle soon after us.

We were afraid the clouds and fog would hide our view in the morning, as they have not been burning off until mid-afternoon. Therefore, we decided to just take a quick run up to White Pass just to take in the view. We were very glad we did because the road up the pass is an 11% grade. That is pretty steep pulling a trailer and stopping and getting going again. Even for the mighty Dodge and its Cummins. We stopped at all the turnouts and read all the historic markers so that we wouldn’t have to start and stop on the hill on the way out in the morning. Because of this hill I would suggest stopping at the sites on your way in, or if you take the ferry into Skagway, do a short day trip as we did.
Looking back toward SkagwayA lake before we head into the cloudsWe came across some bicyclist heading down the pass. You can take a bike ride down the pass as a tour from the ships. Burr cold! The customs stations are quit far apart, each well into their own country. At the true Canadian border, a bit past the summit, the clouds and fog descended. I hiked up the embankment to the border marker between the two countries.
We had to stop at U.S. customs then back into Skagway for the night.
