Tok then south to Haines via Alaska Hwy.

Sunday August 2, 2009

We picked wild raspberries on the hillside adjacent to our RV last night, so this morning we enjoyed part of nature’s bounty for breakfast. This morning the clouds had lifted from the mountains and we were treated to a rare glimpse of the snow-covered peak of Mount Sanford. As we drove the last few miles toward Tok we kept our eye out for moose in the numerous bogs and ponds along the way, and were finally rewarded with the sighting of a cow with her two calves right off the roadside. The little ones were a bit apprehensive about our truck pulling to a stop and jumped behind some trees and stayed there for the 10-15 minutes we were there. Mom however, gave us a one minute stare-down appraisal and found us non-threatening, so she continued with her morning breakfast of whatever it was she was slurping and snorkeling for at the water’s edge. To listen to her dive her head in the water and bow bubbles then come up and slurp and smack while she chewed was entertaining. Some manners! As we got closer to Tok the smoke in the sky started to get worse and ruining the views. We heard that the fires over by south of Denali are still going as they were a month ago and from Fairbanks to Tok is bad. Some say they cannot even drive and see the road.

When we arrived at Tok it was off to the gas station we stopped at last month. They have a FREE dump, fresh water, and a vehicle wash that we used. Our poor little truck and trailer have not been clean as they usually are for over a month now. They both appreciated it very much when we were done.
From there we drove over to the visitors center to park and walk around. A couple from Billings Montana came over a were jealous and wanted to know how we kept our rigs so clean and shiny. I told them that an hour ago it was a different story!

We walked over to the Burnt Paw gift store (notice the lawn mower on the roof! needs a hair cut once in a while.)
to visit new puppies that were not in the pen when we were last here. There were 3 Alaskan sled dogs. So cute and only $165. We passed for now. I thought of my friend Lori as we watched thinking she would like one of them.
Also we had to make another visit to the All Alaska Gifts and Crafts for another T-shirt, oven mitt and the FREE fudge we forgot to pick up last time (coupon in the tour saver book). It was yummy! So this is a post consumption picture.
more later down the road we go.....
