We arrived in Haines midday. We took a walk around town and were greeted on the docks by a friendly chocolate lab. Another greeter in town was a very obese cat with a mangled tail who followed us around, watch out here I come! until exhausted from waddling, he had to take a rest. Man am I tired! There was one cruise ship docked today so the town had more people about.
Haines is unique in that there is not nearly the cruise ship traffic here as there is in ports like Skagway and Juneau. For that reason the businesses here are owned by local families, rather than the cruise lines. It seems less “touristy.”
We decided to stay at the Oceanside RV park, situated right on Portage Cove, so that we could just walk around town without having to drive in.
In the evening we watched 4 ships from Skagway and 1 from Haines head back out to sea. Next year we will have to be on one of those! We were also entertained by an eagle posing and preening at the water’s edge. Another camper spotted a whale breaching and venting, but it was too far out to capture a photo.
More late......
Wow, the photos are great! I loved looking at them all, and want to go next year with you. That cat was something else!! Everything is so-o-o beautiful! Karen, a wishful traveler.
